You should know that Hanif Abdurraquib is, without the slightest exaggeration, one of the best writers in America.
And also someone I had never met until he walked into this studio for this interview.
I’d known of Hanif because of his award-winning poetry and books and music criticism, all of which culminated in him getting a MacArthur Genius Grant in 2021.
And, also, this mural, in his forever home of Columbus, Ohio:
But the reason Hanif is here today is because I just devoured his newest book, There’s Always This Year, which is ostensibly about LeBron James and basketball.
In reality, though, it’s about something far more profound.
