Proxy Fights

EPISODE 333: Be kind and rewind.

My favorite versions of The Sporting Class tend to be the ones where we begin by decoding some massive development in business — the battle between Netflix and Paramount over who gets to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, for instance — and then wind up pitting David Samson against John Skipper.

In this case, David and John’s argument turns out to be a proxy fight of its own — one reaching back decades, actually, to when John was the president of ESPN and David was the president of the Marlins.

The asset then: an entity called Major League Baseball Advanced Media.
