Everybody in sports — and finance, and tech, and politics — wants to be an alpha.
It’s a term that originates from science: a seminal, 384-page book, authored by the world’s foremost wolf expert, Dr. L. David Meech, titled The Wolf: The Ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species (1970).
The alpha wolf concept would spread everywhere, over many printings, to locker rooms and boardrooms and podcast studios. Alpha male is now synonymous with leadership. Dominance. In short: what it means to be a human man.
There is just one problem with Dr. L. David Meech’s concept of the alpha wolf, however, according to Dr. L. David Meech himself (in 2024):
It’s completely wrong.
