The unifying theory of modern American life is that everything is wrestling now.
The presidency is wrestling.
The Education Department is wrestling.
My beef with Bill Simmons is, allegedly, wrestling.
But with the Indiana Pacers now playing the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals, we wanted to dive deep into what we believe to be the most underappreciated wrestling crossover yet.
And to do it, I needed to conscript Neil Punsalan: the only comedy writer in the world who’s made TV shows with both Norm McDonald and Marshawn Lynch.
But the most crucial point on Neil’s resume — even more than the fact that he is half-Filipino — is that he has watched more pro wrestling than I ever have. Particularly over the last 25 years.
And Neil’s theory about the 1998 NBA Finals is not mere fan-fiction. It has resulted, in fact, in one of my favorite investigations that PTFO has done.
This is gonna be a story about billionaires, and backroom deals, and Bob Costas.
Also: chairs.
Lots of chairs.
