We are a nation obsessed with firsts. We are a nation whose biggest and most monocultural event, without question or challenger, is the Super Bowl.
And yet the broadcast that started all of this is not only a vague historical footnote in this country.
Super Bowl I is also the one telecast that the NFL does not want you to see.
But on today’s show… PTFO correspondent Devin Gordon completes his 30-year (!) quest to watch that very telecast. A tape that fewer than five people have ever seen. A tape that no less than the Paley Center for Media deemed its holy grail of lost broadcast artifacts. A tape that Sports Illustrated once valued at seven figures, if found. One of the “most valuable treasures” in sports history.
What I did not anticipate is that this same quest would also involve hydrogen-peroxide-fueled jetpacks and Playgirl Magazine. And one extremely intentional cat.
DKN/YOUTUBE SPOILER ALERT:

P.S. There’s one picture, at the very end of this episode, that I will not screenshot here. Because I just can’t bring myself to step on the kicker of this story.
