My old SI colleague, Alan Shipnuck, is a longtime journalist who has sparred with Phil and authored Phil (the definitive unauthorized biography, published in 2022, which was built upon hundreds and hundreds of interviews).

Few writers have as long a view of one of the most colorful characters in sports.

Even if that character, at one point, also pretended not to know him.
