You should know that Will Forte is responsible for some of the most idiosyncratically bizarre characters in the history of American comedy.
Not to mention my favorite comedy of all time.
MacGruber co-starred Val Kilmer and Kristin Wiig and isn’t even really about the SNL sketch that inspired it, by the way. I’ll finally get to talk to Will about all that.
But what I also did, in preparation for this interview, was ask Hollywood people why, specifically, they all clearly love working with this guy who improvised with The Groundlings and wrote for Letterman and got Saturday Night Live and did 30 Rock and Conan and The Last Man on Earth and also a serious, critically acclaimed film like Nebraska.
And at some point in my research, Mutual Friend of PTFO Mike Schur — who wrote for SNL and The Office before creating Parks and Rec and many other TV shows — told me something intriguing.
Mike told me that out of all the SNL auditions he’s ever seen, nothing has ever made him laugh harder than Will Forte’s.
Which turned out to be just one case study, among many, of Will’s real superpower: commitment.
